Help Shatter the Silence!

Over 93 million American adults have limited reading, writing and comprehension skills, costing our economy $60 billion annually in lost productivity, generating $73 billion in unnecessary health care expenses, and contributing to a host of other social problems ranging from crime and drug abuse to unemployment and homelessness; statistically it's much higher in countries around the world. A national effort conducted by Literacy Powerline, "The Literacy Scroll: 1,000,000 Signatures for Literacy" is making its way across the United States with plans to present it to President Obama on September 8, 2010 - International Literacy Day (Literacy Awareness Day here in Benicia). Though library literacy programs, community based organizations, faith-based organizations and others strive to address the needs of the low-level adult learner on a daily basis, timed efforts for public awareness are still necessary; this is one such effort.

Stop by the Benicia Public Library and sign the Declaration for the Right to Literacy Scroll either Wednesday or Thursday. It only takes a minute or two to sign. Look for the scroll near the front doors and help "shatter the silence".
