One-on-One Tutoring:

Free, private tutoring is available to anyone who lives in Benicia, is over 16, out of school, and wants to improve his or her basic reading skills. The tutoring focus is on the student's goals, which often are reading to a child, helping a child with schoolwork, reading the newspaper, using a computer, getting a job - or a better job, getting a driver’s license, becoming a citizen, or getting a GED or high school diploma.

  • All tutoring is done by volunteers from the community who receive tutor training before being matched with a learner.
  • Learner and tutor pairs meet once or twice a week, for about two hours each time, at a time and place that is convenient for both of them.

Computer Lab:

The Computer Lab is structured to help learners build their oral and written English skills. Hands-on support and great computer software that promotes learning is provided. Tutor support is encouraged and welcomed.

Families for Literacy Program:

The Families for Literacy Program provides services to Adult Literacy students who have preschool children in the home. The goal of the program is to change low-level reading patterns by encouraging adults to read to their children regularly, beginning at a young age. The program is funded through a California State Library grant.
