Volunteer Tutor Information

 Becoming a Tutor

All tutoring is done by adult volunteers from the community. Potential tutors receive 13.5 hours of training before being matched with a learner. The training consists of an evening orientation and 2 Saturday sessions, and is offered quarterly. You must attend all three sessions in order to be matched with an adult learner.

  • The training includes a general orientation to the program and topics such as learning styles, goal setting, reading materials and methods for adults, spelling and writing strategies and ideas for getting started.
  • Tutoring pairs meet once or twice a week, for two hours each time, at a time and place convenient to both people.
  • Staff support and workshops are available to assist tutors in the use of materials and tutoring methods.

Qualities of a tutor:

  • The most important qualities in tutors are having a big heart, being patient, flexible, and supportive of adult learners as they work toward their goals.

If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please call the Literacy office at 746-4341 or email Lynne Price at lynne.price@ci.benicia.ca.us.
